Call for Papers - ESG Evolution: Navigating Future Challenges and Opportunities
About : ESG assets are projected to reach $50 trillion by 2025, constituting over a third of the estimated $140.5 trillion in total global assets under management (Bloomberg). The literature on ESG is evolving rapidly, see for instance, Fama (2021); Alex Edman (2022); Cornell. (2021); Cornell & Shapiro (2021) and Cumming et al (2024) among others. Alex Edman (2022) argues that ESG holds significant importance yet is not uniquely exceptional. He states that companies should not be praised solely for enhancing their ESG performance, neglecting other intangible assets that generate long-term financial and social returns. Prior studies also find that although ESG investing may have positive societal impacts, it does not necessarily lead to higher returns for investors; However, as the polarisation regarding ESG grows, stakeholders with differing and sometimes conflicting ideologies and interests engage in debates over its relevance and impact (Forbs, 2023. Larcker et al (2022) discuss seven commonly accepted myths surrounding ESG, revealing that many lack empirical evidence. Alex Edman (2024) proposed a significant shift in the practice of ESG to the informed creation of long-term value, namely Rational Sustainability. This call for papers encourages research to not only study companies’ commitment to ESG principles e.g., voluntary disclosure during crisis period and whether companies may prioritize financial performance over ESG considerations (value vs values) during times of economic instability but also the future development, challenges of ESG.

Call for Papers - 3rd International Symposium for Mathematical Finance, Banking and Insurance, ISFBI’24
About : Covid-19 pandemic crisis has become a major worldwide economic crisis. Researchers and practitioners are now questioning the new world overwhelming their fields of research and industry practices. With historically low rates levels in the western economies, an exponential unemployment, a negative price for oil barrel and a growing number of companies defaults in key industries, finance -as a disciplinary field- is pushed at its further burdens. The double effect of this unexpected crisis and the growing competition of FinTechs and BigTechs accelerates the transformation of the whole banking and insurance industry . Central Banks are also at a crossroad: is there a space to classical monetary policy when even money creation is challenged by crypto currencies?

Corporate restructuring, which involves changes to operations, structure or financing, provides a way to ensure the continuing profitability of businesses, and even their very survival. Corporate restructuring research has a long history, but the current economic and environmental conditions under which firms are operating suggest the need to revisit and update our knowledge of the topic. To better understand the challenges and opportunities of the current tensions for firms, and their implications for governance and regulation, SKEMA Business School will dedicate its 2023 Finance Conference to Corporate Restructuring. 9th International Conference on Sovereign Bond Markets.
About : The conference this year focuses on Sovereign Bond Markets in Unstable Times, and it is hosted by the Carroll School of Management, Boston College. Co-organizers include the NYU Stern/Volatility and Risk Institute, the Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE, the Imperial College/Brevan Howard Centre for Financial Analysis, London Business School/AQR Asset Management Institute, the Bank of Canada, the Deutsche Bundesbank, and the European Central Bank. SOVEREIGN BOND MARKETS IN UNSTABLE TIMES Recent financial and real instability presented numerous unprecedented challenges to central banks and governments in both industrialized countries and emerging markets. As financial markets digest the latest round of QE unwinding, rampant inflation takes root in developed economies while the protracted war in Ukraine and new coronavirus waves in China both strain global supply chains and destabilize the pre-existing economic and geopolitical order. This unprecedented confluence of challenges will force policy makers to adopt new strategies, often untested, in order to fight inflation and ensure stable deficit funding while minimizing the potential distortions of their actions on both Wall Street and Main Street --- from liquidity drainage to excessive economic contraction to volatility and financial instability. Paper Submissions : Those wishing to present a paper at the Conference should submit by December 1, 2022 at sovereign.conference@greta.it |

Call for paper for the Special Issue of EFM on “Financial Innovation, Regulations and Banking”.
About :The fast-growing adoption of financial innovation is rapidly changing the value chain in financial services encompassing banking, insurance, asset management, and capital markets. Such innovation is helping to revolutionize payments, wealth advisory services (through robotic systems), fundraising, and investment activities. The emerging financial solutions are also rapidly being developed to help banks and other financial firms deal with the complexities of regulatory compliance and other operational issues. The emergence of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies have also altered the ways in which data can be stored securely and anonymously (through distributed ledger systems). Ways in which we view the role and functions of currencies have also changed by the emergence of over 3000 digital currencies. Financial innovation and financial technology developments will create great opportunities but will also pose new sources of risks to the banking sector. Traditional bank business models are being reconfigured. Increased competition and narrower profit margins from traditional banking (as well as capital markets and insurance) areas will force existing players to adopt new technologies, improve customer experience, and open up new revenue streams to address these challenges.

NEOMA Business School Conference on Sustainable Finance.
About : The sustainable finance market has experienced exponential growth, reaching USD 2.3 trillion of sustainable debt outstanding at the end of September 2021 with USD 779 billion only in the first three quarters of 2021. Such explosion raises a lot of challenges and concerns regarding their real impact on the financial system and more broadly on our society, while our understanding is still far from enough.
Also, with the recently experienced disruptions of environmental, social and governance changes, financial markets have been subject to both the pressure to adapt to these changes, and the need to act on them for the future. This has reflected itself in the significant growth of sustainable securities and encouraging sustainable practices, with the common goal of doing well by doing good.
The "Finance for Good" sub-area of excellence of the World We Want Area of Excellence and the Finance Department of NEOMA Business School organize their first Conference on Sustainable Finance, to be held on the Paris campus on May 20, 2022. The Conference aims to share the current state-of–the-art in the understanding of sustainable finance. It will be an excellent opportunity to bring together renowned academics, in order to build a constructive dialogue on the relationship between ESG practices, issues and challenges, and how finance meets these aspects.

8th International Conference on Sovereign Bond Markets.
About : The conference this year focuses on Sovereign Capital Markets in Pandemic Times, and it is hosted by the Bank of England. Co-organizers include the NYU Stern | Volatility and Risk Institute, Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE, the Imperial College | Brevan Howard Centre for Financial Analysis, London Business School | AQR Asset Management Institute, the Bank of Canada, the Deutsche Bundesbank, and the European Central Bank.
The coronavirus pandemic presented numerous unprecedented challenges to central banks in both industrialized countries and emerging markets. The sudden global recession, the often-interrupted recovery, the displacement of labor, capital, and financial resources all required policy makers to adopt new strategies, often untested, in order to provide liquidity to the markets, reduce the cost of capital, and ultimately foster rapid economic growth - all the while the pandemic continued to destabilize the pre-existing economic and geopolitical order. These actions raise numerous questions about their rationale and effectiveness as well as about their potential distortions on both Wall Street and Main Street - from inflationary pressures to a liquidity glut to excessive risk-taking to volatility and financial instability.
The final program will include both submitted and invited papers.

OUTLINE OF THE CONFERENCE: Ever since the financial crisis of 2008/2009, the world’s leading economies have been struggling with deflationary tendencies. Inflation on the other hand, even in the face of unprecedented monetary easing by central banks, appeared like an “extinct volcano”. This gave even rise to an alternative branch of economic thought called “New Monetary Theory”, which claims that monetary stability can be maintained, even if high and further increasing public debt is routinely supported by monetary easing.

Schmalenbach Journal of Business Research - Special Issue on Resilience.
About :
The COVID-19 pandemic has been perceived as a “stress test” of unprecedented dimensions, challenging the resilience of business models, societal institutions, and entire economies. While the pandemic is still in full swing, plenty of empirical evidence has emerged already. Simultaneously, the extent of the climate and biodiversity crises are becoming increasingly clear, fundamentally questioning the way we have done business up to now. This demonstrates that “going back to normal” may not be aligned with a resilient business world. Now is a perfect time to take stock and analyze the shortcomings and lack of resiliencies of current business models in order to learn from this pandemic and help businesses, institutions, societies, and economies to gain additional resilience.
TOPICS: This call for papers relates to, for example, the following research questions:
- How can the resilience of organizations, supply chains, economies, societies, political systems, and our planet be aligned?
- How can the benefits of diversification be maintained in future production networks, while at the same time the benefits of economies of scale are exploited?
- (How) Should objectives be adjusted to address (undiversifiable) bottleneck risks?
- How to value buffer stocks and reserves for rare disasters?
- How to value flexible production techniques relative to focused specialization?
- How to value general education for flexible tasks (or missions) relative to specialist training?
- How to allocate scarce human resources, e.g. in health care organizations, to provide buffers for unforeseen events?
- How does resilience relate to business processes?
- How to govern supply chains, e.g. pharmaceuticals and medical devices, to avoid shortage of supply?
- What is the role of the organization’s managers and strategic decision-makers in organizational resilience?
- How can resilience be related to the time horizon of managers and investors?

The Pacific Center for Asset Management (PCAM) at the University of California San Diego was founded in 2019 with the mission to improve the dialogue between major asset owners around the world -- including sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, foundations and their beneficiaries – and the academic community in economics and finance. With the input of members of a CIO Advisory Council and an Academic Advisory Council, we seek to identify topics that are under-researched, but of high importance in asset management, and invite proposals for independent academic research on them. Benefits to academic researchers is financial support for relevant new research, access to new data sets and tools shared by member asset owners/CIOs, and a venue to present new research, to network with, and to gain feedback from industry experts.
SUBMISSION PROCESS: The PCAM calls for scholars to submit a proposal for a research project that addresses one of the three topics. Proposals will be reviewed by a committee drawn from the PCAM Academic Advisory Committee. The review committee will be chaired by Professor Andrew Karolyi of Cornell University. The goal is to fund one project for each of the three topics.
Proposals should be no longer than 5 pages and should describe the research idea, expected methodology to be employed, and data requirements. If a proposal is related to an existing working paper or publication by the submitter, then these are also welcome as part of the submission. Principal and co-investigators should submit updated CVs.

EDITORS:
Sabri Boubaker, EM Normandie Business School, Paris, France
Thai-Ha Le, Fulbright School of Public Policy & Management, Fulbright University Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam
BOOK DESCRIPTION: For the past year and a half, the world’s hottest topic seems to revolve around COVID-19. Since its appearance from the beginning of 2020, the pandemic has undeniably wreaked havoc on global trade, profoundly affecting people’s lives and having a significant impact on economic growth worldwide. Many people regard COVID-19 as “the fury of nature.” However, there are still ongoing critical problems facing the world, even in the context of the pandemic that have not cooled down, one of which is climate change. The recent unusual extreme weather conditions thrusted climate change into media limelight and forefront of the public agenda. It also spurred numerous debates on how climate change is altering our environment. Nowadays, climate change is receiving special attention from many organizations, countries, and governments worldwide because of its profound influence on the global economy and people’s lives. Natural disasters, prolonged drought can destroy infrastructure, threaten crops and food production, as well as people’s lives and lead to mass migration. The effects of climate change are evident everywhere globally and appear to be more severe than ever before.
THEMES: The book welcomes contributions that can address the issues on environmental and green finance towards a sustainable world. It is intended to focus (though not limited to) on the following themes.
– Environmental finance
– Green finance
– Environmental finance, green finance and Covid-19
– Financing sustainable goals: creating an efficient market through innovative policies and instruments
– Financing green energy
– Environmental impact investments
– Green finance as instruments to fund the energy transition: assessing the triple perspective of impact, risk, and return
– Green bonds as a tool against climate change: principles, pricings, and dark sides
– Green banking: current and future challenges
– Sustainable finance: trends, opportunities, and risks
– Opportunities and challenges of carbon market finance
– Financial innovations and carbon markets
– Enhancing efficiency in sustainable markets
– Financing sustainable goals: economic and legal implications
– Corporate social responsibility and environmental responsibility

Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, Doctoral Program Ph.D. in Accounting, Finance, and Management
Call for Applications, 10 Fully-funded Ph.D. Fellowships.
About :Frankfurt School offers a five-year full-time Ph.D. program in Accounting, Finance, and Management. We are looking to attract the most talented doctoral students in these fields and provide a stimulating, challenging, yet nurturing environment.
PROGRAM DETAILS: Researchers at Frankfurt School work on fundamental problems that challenge firms and society: How should firms and investors respond to climate change? Can markets be redesigned to support fair outcomes? Does working from home improve gender equality?
The Frankfurt School doctoral program equips students to contribute to these debates. The first two years consist of common classes in which students focus on analytical and methodological skills. Students also take courses in their chosen area of academic specialization in Accounting, Finance, or Management, which provides the foundations from which to develop research topics. The program encourages students to broaden their scope and obtain training in related areas such as data sciences, operations research, or economics.
The coursework phase ends when students successfully pass their Qualifying Exam and graduate to the dissertation phase. At this time, students have the opportunity to obtain a Master’s degree (M.Sc.) as part of their doctoral program. In the dissertation stage (years 3-5), students are fully involved in research and write their dissertations.
Frankfurt School faculty regularly publish in leading scholarly journals and have editorial experience for top outlets, including Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Accounting Research, and The Accounting Review. Faculty members work closely with students, both as mentors and as co-authors. While our primary intention is to provide graduates with an ideal platform to enter the world of academia, their training allows students to develop solutions for complex problems, making them valuable for careers in government, banks, regulatory agencies, and corporations.

Management Science Special Issue on The Human-Algorithm Connection.
About :Algorithms have become ubiquitous. They permeate all kinds of daily activities and shape up production processes and the provision of services. The advent of big data and the widespread adoption of machine learning and analytics overall has catapulted the presence of algorithms to new levels. Innovative business models have been built around algorithms and novel use cases have emerged that were unthinkable not long ago. There are no signs of this trend reverting. Quite the opposite. Most likely the preponderance and reliance on algorithms is posed to accelerate in the upcoming years.
For all their importance, the use of algorithms creates a new set of challenges, in great part because they do not exist in a vacuum. Algorithms are developed and controlled by humans, and the output of algorithms directly and indirectly affects humans' decisions and actions. Moreover, algorithms are created within organizations with a purpose that should align with an organization's mission and strategy. Finally, at an aggregate level, algorithms can have an impact on society as a whole.
The special issue on the human-algorithm connection seeks to attract research that gives decision-makers a better understanding of the coexistence of humans with algorithms and how to improve it. The work must have an important human component (i.e., purely focusing on algorithms won't suffice) and algorithms can be understood in a broad sense including machines and apps. Top quality papers in any of the research areas represented by Management Science are welcome, both theoretical and empirical. Interdisciplinary studies are also highly encouraged.

International Conference on Technology and Innovation in Business: A Sustainable Perspective
About :The COVID-19 has accelerated the speed of business innovation and digitization in many areas including banking, insurance, logistics, and even art ownership. On-line and mobile services are the natural paths to employ big data. blockchain, and Fintech to improve cost efficiency as well as service quality for business. However, technological breakthrough and innovation also bring uncertainty and risks that are not easy to measure in the early stage of adoption. In addition, with the global movement on fighting climate change and promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ESG has generated tremendous research interest.
While recent academic research recognizes the effects of applications of technologies and ESG criteria in business, we see a research gap on exploring the linkages among sustainability, risk and technologies applied in all areas of business. We expect that, technology can improve the efficiency and profit margin of businesses but it can also enhance sustainability such as the ESG performance of the product and services directly and indirectly. In short, it is time to devote publication spaces on empirical evidence and directions of these linkages in business research.
In short, this conference welcomes research related to technology, innovation, sustainability and their linkages in a flexible manner. Researchers can submit papers addressing these issues individually or linking these elements together. We have the privilege of providing publication opportunities to accepted conference papers in two SSCI journals: Journal of Financial Stability (JFS) and Research in International Business and Finance (RIBAF). Editors-in-Chief and guest editors of the conference-track of these journals will attend the presentations and evaluate the papers. Presenters will receive feedback of paper recommendations within one week and accepted papers are expected to be published by end of 2022 in regular issues of these two journals.

“FinTech Research and Applications: Challenges and Opportunities”
About :The environment for international financial services has become extremely competitive and the
financial services sector is more technology intensive than it has ever been. The recent global
financial crisis along with the financial implications of the Covid-19 pandemic have revealed
that the business models and regulatory frameworks in place in different countries are incomplete and insufficient to prevent further build ups of vulnerabilities in the financial services sector that can generate systemic risk in the financial system. Moreover, competition from nonbank financial intermediation and technology firms has forced banks and financial services
firms to concentrate further on new business opportunities, new business models and modernised market practices that are based on digital transformation. Financial Technology (FinTech)
is a rapidly growing industry that uses technology to improve financial services, serving both
consumers and businesses alike but alongside these opportunities, regulatory challenges lie
ahead. |

Call for Papers on “The Impact of COVID-19 on Financial Markets, Banking Systems, and the Overall Economy”
About : COVID-19 emerged as a black swan event that stifled the global economy. COVID-19 resulted in social isolation within countries, closed borders, loss of business, loss of employment, industry-wide shutdowns, and many more adverse economic effects. Governments across the globe initiated fiscal and monetary stimulus programs to combat the damaging economic effects caused by the virus. Volatility in the financial markets spiked in the aftermath of the crisis, most likely due to difficulty in estimating the extent of the economical damage caused by this global event, which is still unfolding. The extent of the downturn could be felt over many years. Finance Research Letters invites researchers to submit short focused papers for this special issue on The Impact of COVID-19 on Financial Markets, Banking systems, and the Overall Economy. John Goodell presents brief anthology of the potential impact of COVID – 19 on financial markets in his recent article titled “COVID-19 and finance: Agendas for future research” forthcoming in Finance Research Letters and also listed on the U.S. National Institute of Health website - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7152896/ . Quest for Restoring Financial Stability in India Kindle Edition - Book
About:Beyond the headline-grabbing issues, the Indian economy is struggling to solve a critical problem: How to restore and maintain financial stability on a durable basis. In this book titled, Quest for Restoring Financial Stability in India, Former Deputy Governor of RBI, Dr. Viral V. Acharya, talks about his quest for restoring financial stability in India and offers a concrete plan for sustained improvement. Dr Acharya shares a feasible plan to address the recapitalization needs of public sector banks, offering solutions on how to improve credit allocation by credit intermediaries and establish viable and efficient capital markets. Elucidating the need-of-the-hour reforms, this book also raises several stark and unanswered questions related to the re-emergence of fiscal dominance in India, not just of monetary policy tools but also of banking regulations. It makes a persuasive case for striking the right balance between the government, centralbank, private sector and markets, in order to improve long-run growth prospects for the real economy.

The Great Demographic Reversal: Book
AboutThis original and panoramic book proposes that the underlying forces of demography and globalisation will shortly reverse three multi-decade global trends – it will raise inflation and interest rates, but lead to a pullback in inequality. “Whatever the future holds”, the authors argue, “it will be nothing like the past”. Deflationary headwinds over the last three decades have been primarily due to an enormous surge in the world’s available labour supply, owing to very favourable demographic trends and the entry of China and Eastern Europe into the world’s trading system. This book demonstrates how these demographic trends are on the point of reversing sharply, coinciding with a retreat from globalisation. The result? Ageing can be expected to raise inflation and interest rates, bringing a slew of problems for an over-indebted world economy, but is also anticipated to increase the share of labour, so that inequality falls. Covering many social and political factors, as well as those that are more purely macroeconomic, the authors address topics including ageing, dementia, inequality, populism, retirement and debt finance, among others. |

Behavioral Finance: The Second Generation: Book
About:Behavioral finance presented in this book is the second-generation of behavioral finance. The first generation, starting in the early 1980s, largely accepted standard finance’s notion of people’s wants as “rational” wants—restricted to the utilitarian benefits of high returns and low risk. That first generation commonly described people as “irrational”—succumbing to cognitive and emotional errors and misled on their way to their rational wants. The second generation describes people as normal. It begins by acknowledging the full range of people’s normal wants and their benefits—utilitarian, expressive, and emotional—distinguishes normal wants from errors, and offers guidance on using shortcuts and avoiding errors on the way to satisfying normal wants. People’s normal wants include financial security, nurturing children and families, gaining high social status, and staying true to values. People’s normal wants, even more than their cognitive and emotional shortcuts and errors, underlie answers to important questions of finance, including saving and spending, portfolio construction, asset pricing, and market efficiency. |

Applied Regression Analysis for Business- Book.
About:Regression analysis, as a part of statistics and econometrics, constitutes one of the most commonly applied quantitative analytical tool in economics and business. It serves various purposes, from simple inferring about directions and strengths of relationships between economic variables to simulating and forecasting the future. However, it is often abused, either by being applied in areas which by their nature are “immune” to statistical modeling (where obtaining reliable statistical findings or forecasts is often impossible, even though elegant regression models may be built) or by being applied without adequate care devoted to possible traps (e.g., structural changes occurring within modeled relationships or a presence of multivariate outliers).

EFM 2020 Special Issue_Call for Papers_Machine Learning Finance
About: At the present time, machine learning and its interaction with financial decision is of topical interest. Given the
increasing volume of research in this area, accurate historical records, and the quantitative nature of the finance world, machine
learning methods find fruitful applications in areas such as trading, risk modelling, natural language processing, risk
management and pricing. Machine learning techniques are increasingly extending and enhancing decision-making in finance,
insurance and economics through such means as analyzing data trends, providing forecasts, developing data consistency,
quantifying financial risk, and suggesting courses of action. Financial Times argue that 89% of European banks have started
work with machine learning, while the US banking sector plans to invest more than $20 billion in new technologies by 2020
(13/5/18, FT).

EFM Special Issue- “Financial Innovation, Regulations and Banking”
About:The fast-growing adoption of financial innovation is rapidly changing the value chain in financial services
encompassing banking, insurance, asset management, and capital markets. Such innovation is helping to revolutionize
payments, wealth advisory services (through robotic systems), fundraising, and investment activities. The emerging financial
solutions are also rapidly being developed to help banks and other financial firms deal with the complexities of regulatory
compliance and other operational issues. The emergence of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies have also altered the
ways in which data can be stored securely and anonymously (through distributed ledger systems). Ways in which we view the
role and functions of currencies have also changed by the emergence of over 3000 digital currencies. Fincial innovation and
financial technology developments will create great opportunities but will also pose new sources of risks to the banking sector.
Traditional bank business models are being reconfigured. Increased competition and narrower profit margins from traditional
banking (as well as capital markets and insurance) areas will force existing players to adopt new technologies, improve
customer experience, and open up new revenue streams to address these challenges. |

EFM Special Issue 2-Ship Finance and Financial Risk Management- Call for papers
About: Since the financial crisis of 2008, the near-collapse of the European banking system together with an everincreasing regulatory banking framework resulted in market players in the international shipping industry to experience lack of bank finance liquidity, with high margins, low loan-to-value ratios and restrictive covenants and collaterals. This created a paradigm shift in the global ship finance market, as new entrants have appeared in new regions while new structured products have been offered to the industry. Such examples include the public capital markets for equity and debt, the high yield bond market, Export Credit Agencies, the appearance of ship finance companies, the entrance to the industry of private ship funds, together with the Asian Banks and related financial intermediates. Furthermore, a series of Mergers & Acquisitions took place across all traditional shipping sectors, together with structured risk management solutions to hedge the adverse price fluctuations of freight rates, vessel values and bunker prices. In such an uncertain environment, a new business model is emerging for the international maritime transportation industry, where market players need to evolve and learn to react quickly to change and market disruptions. The objective of the Special Issue is to publish high quality papers on shipping finance and maritime financial risk management, and thus, provide a platform for researchers to expand the existing knowledge in this area, by providing plausible answers to the aforementioned market challenges and disruptions |
